Hello to Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (and Sue Vertue), and away we go!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:00
[Comment From Melissa]
Benedict Cumberbatch was here last week and knew Mark Gatiss would be chatting today, and said that Sherlock’s message to Mycroft was, “What took you so long!?” And Mycroft’s reply is...?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:01
Gatiss/Moffat:
Mark: who are you again? and why is your hair that silly colour?<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:02
[Comment From Tidmas]
How did you decide that Mark was going to play Mycroft?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:02
Gatiss/Moffat:
It was Steve Thompson's idea we just noticed that Mark had the same colouring and look as benedict and Mark loved the idea. we spotted the opportunity to wrong foot the audience over Moriarty.<

Most adaptations, in my opinion, fail to give a good portrayal of the Holmes/Watson friendship as described in the stories. But “Sherlock” really seems to capture it very well. How would you describe the relationship, and what do you think it is about “Sherlock’s” interpretation that makes it so unique from other adaptations?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:06
MasterpieceModerator:
FYI - we're getting lots of questions about the ending of 'The Great Game," and we'll be sure to tackle them later on!

Monday November 8, 2010 1:11
Gatiss/Moffat:
They are so difficult to do that it is handy to lean on Doyle sometimes. Some deductions seem to have a natural modern equivalence such as the cellphone/watch, others take more thinking about. We've started a file on any we come up with for future use<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:12
[Comment From Q]
It’s been noticed online that Sherlock owns the book “Teleological Responses of the Virus” by Lavinia Smith - the aunt of Doctor Who companion Sarah Jane Smith. Are you implying that Sherlock exists in the same universe as Doctor Who, and if so, can we expect a crossover episode in the near future (pretty please)?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:12
Gatiss/Moffat:
Mark: Please deduce this fact, it's the same art department and Baker Street is in the studio next door to the Sarah Jane Adventures. End of conspiracy theory!

It seems that a lot of fans are interested in know if there are any other "easter eggs" that they'll be able to pick up on repeat viewings (available until Dec. 7 at pbs.org/masterpiece)...

Monday November 8, 2010 1:16
[Comment From Wyatt, Alex and Emma]
How did you come up with the idea for the new Moriarty?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:17
[Comment From Liz]
Video in the middle of a chat. Masterpiece, you are made of epic win!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:17
Gatiss/Moffat:
The truth is that during the filming of the pilot Mark said that Molly should have a boyfriend and Sherlock deduces is gay so that was beginning of the 'blind'. We thought that Moriarty had also become a bit cosy and should be genuinly terrifying, evil and capable of anything. Not unlike ourselves<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:18
[Comment From Charlotte Tigwell]
Were there any scenes that were most difficult to write and which ones were the most enjoyable?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:19
Gatiss/Moffat:
All. None<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:19
MasterpieceModerator:
And now, the topic we've all been waiting for - "The Great Game" and the ending!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:19
[Comment From Xavier]
The ending of The Great Game was cruel (and awesome, but mostly cruel). I will accept your apology now.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:19
[Comment From Alexia]
Did you always intent to have The Great Game end on such a massive cliff hanger? Even when you knew there may not be a second series?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:20
Gatiss/Moffat:
you'll wait a long while! Make em cry, make em laugh, make em wait!<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:20
[Comment From Zaira Zaira : ]
Is it true that the voice of the child at the end of The Grat Game is Mr. Moffat's son?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:21
Gatiss/Moffat:
At an early stage episode 3 had a more low key ending but as we ramped up the plot we needed a bigger pay off<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:21
What do you think happens after the screen goes dark?
The bomb is a dud ( 20% )
The snipers are actually Lestrade & Co ( 9% )
The snipers are actually Mycroft & Co ( 41% )
The bomb explodes and kills Moriarty ( 3% )
...Or is he Moriarty? ( 26% )
Gatiss/Moffat:
Zaira, yes it's true. Louis Moffat and wasn't he good! Cost a lot of sweets<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:22
[Comment From Saira]
Will you be introducing Irene Adler anytime soon? And if so, have you cast someone already?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:22
Gatiss/Moffat:
Wait and see<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:22
MasterpieceModerator:
We've received numerous questions about this - Any hints for the second season of "Sherlock"?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:23
Gatiss/Moffat:
3 words, make of them what you will (and don't be obvious). Adler, Hound, Reichenbach....<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:24
[Comment From Kathleen]
Andrew Scott was a phenomenal Moriarty- what made you decide to go in the direction of a younger actor for a role that is often associated with a slightly older man?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:24
[Comment From JIMMY♡ ]
I LOVE MORIARTY. DON'T KILL HIM!!!!!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:25
Gatiss/Moffat:
In the end we cast the best actor and that determined the age o Moriarty<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:25
[Comment From Emily Liz]
You're both geniuses. Do you have a back-story for Sherlock and Watson and if so, can you share bits and pieces of it with us?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:25
Gatiss/Moffat:
John's backstory is pretty obvious, Sherlock's is properly mysterious. we are trying to be true to Doyle and opening little windows on possibilities<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:27
[Comment From Alexia]
Are either of you aware that you've practically been promoted to god status on the internet? (Gatiss often being referred to as Godtiss)
Monday November 8, 2010 1:27
Gatiss/Moffat:
Steven: Am I therefore Godfat?
Mark: At least that might be pronounced correctly<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:28
[Comment From Abby Kerfoot]
Doctor Who, a program you both love and write for was strongly influenced by Sherlock Holmes in its early days. Did you find yourselves drawing comparisons between the characters of Sherlock and the Doctor as you wrote for the two shows or did you keep them unconnected in your minds? Also, you're both brilliant oh my god.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:28
MasterpieceModerator:
Here's Steven and Mark chatting Sherlock and Doctor Who...
Monday November 8, 2010 1:29
Gatiss/Moffat:
Steven:Genuinely don't think about it. They are opposites. The Doctor is like an angel who aspires to be human and Sherlock is a man who aspires to be a god<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:29
[Comment From Tracy]
Lestrade says Sherlock Holmes is a Great Man and if we're lucky he may become a Good Man. Is this going to be a recurring theme of the series? What makes a good man?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:30
Favorite nickname for Steven and/or Mark?
Moffdog ( 8% )
Gatisshound ( 13% )
The Grand Moff ( 29% )
The Moff ( 50% )

Monday November 8, 2010 1:31
[Comment From Laura.]
Do you realise how many television sets may have been damaged at the end of the "The Great Game"?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:32
[Comment From Stefanie]
I had trouble sleeping last night... I couldn't stop thinking about the ending. Thanks a lot (no really - thanks a lot - it was amazing!)
Monday November 8, 2010 1:33
Gatiss/Moffat:
Laura. We have precise records!<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:33
[Comment From Janelle Holguin]

Monday November 8, 2010 1:33
Gatiss/Moffat:
Mark: The Adventures
Steven: A study in scarlet<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:33

Monday November 8, 2010 1:34
Gatiss/Moffat:
No....<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:34
MasterpieceModerator:
Sherlock has diagnosed himself as a "high-functioning sociopath." Benedict has said he plays him with an element of Aspergers. Do you have a diagnosis for Sherlock?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:34
[Comment From sarah s.]
What? No Moustache! The fashion is exquisite.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:35

Steven, what is your favourite line that Mark has written in Sherlock and visa versa?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:36
[Comment From ian portacio]
sherlock: huge nerd who needs to get out more.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:36
Gatiss/Moffat:
Steven: It's actually a line that was cut twice so you might see it in the next series - nothing is ever wasted.
Mark: I've got a blanket<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:37
[Comment From Colleen]
The overarch of Season One seemed to focus, intentionally and unintentionally, on discovering the identity or Moriarty. Will the overarch of Season Two continue to be focused on him or will there be an added continuous "theme"? And thank you for the wonderful television!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:37
[Comment From Paola]
I really hope Andrew Scott's Moriarty is the real Moriarty and not a scam because Jim is entertaining and terrifying and absolutely perfect!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:37
Gatiss/Moffat:
We have big plans for the series arc but....wait and see. Sorry to tease, but not very< As Oscar Wilde said. The suspense is killling me, I hope it will last<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:38
MasterpieceModerator:
A number of our viewers wanted to know - How did you get the idea of popping up what Sherlock was thinking and and the texts they received?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:39
[Comment From Zaira]
And you just quoted Oscar Wilde. I love you more.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:39

iPhone ( 11% )
Blackberry ( 26% )
Nokia ( 2% )
None-Will always use John's, Mrs. Hudson's, etc. ( 55% )
Gatiss/Moffat:
It was Paul McGuigan's idea which we extended to Sherlock's thoughts rather than just texts as was originally intended<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:39
[Comment From Ann]
Will there be more interactive media for fan's next season. For example: Twitter?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:39
Gatiss/Moffat:
Sue say's probably, she was in fact discussing it today<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:40
[Comment From avery]

Monday November 8, 2010 1:40
Gatiss/Moffat:
It was Steven's but we read your question as gratified!<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:41
[Comment From Elizabeth]
People are deducing that the absence of The Coat in the last scene as meaning Sherlock will end up in the water. Well, wouldn't want to ge that wet!! Just nod or shake your head
Monday November 8, 2010 1:41
Gatiss/Moffat:
We have several. Incidentally the coat has now demanded its own spin off series. The Coat<

Monday November 8, 2010 1:42
[Comment From Michele McG]
What about the scarf? Does it get a webisode?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:43
Gatiss/Moffat:
Total. Sherlock is described in the stories as having quiet primness of dress. We knew we wanted him to look sharp and modern and somehow he had to have a wonderful coat<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:44
[Comment From Essie]
The rapid-fire deduction monologues in this series are really great. How do you go about writing those, and how long do they typically take?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:44
Gatiss/Moffat:
The scarf wanted a cartoon spinoff but it didn't really work<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:44
Gatiss/Moffat:
Forever!!! It's hard to write somebody who is cleverer than yourself.<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:45
[Comment From Meaghan]
Is there any hope for a Sherlock/Doctor Who crossover episode?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:45

There are clearly no Daleks in Sherlock's universe!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:46
[Comment From Alice]
Are you aware of the masses of fanfiction written about your television series?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:46
Gatiss/Moffat:
We're aware but don't read it. Sorry.<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:46
[Comment From Mi]
First - I love you both. Second - If you were evil geniuses how would you rule the world?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:46
Gatiss/Moffat:
Thankyou. We are evil geniuses, how do you know we don't rule the world!<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:47
[Comment From Dee]
Do you feel the new Sherlock is more morally ambiguous than Doyle's? In the books, he is usually pretty firmly on the side of law enforcement. Except that time he broke into the house of the serial blackmailer. Love the show!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:47
Gatiss/Moffat:
We're in the very priveleged position of being at the very beginning - everything is up for grabs!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:48
[Comment From Izzy]
Are we going to learn more about Sherlock and Mycroft's 'childish feud'?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:49
Gatiss/Moffat:
The childish feud never stops - stay tuned. As Yoda might say "Back story reveal do not you."
Monday November 8, 2010 1:49
[Comment From Meaghan]
What is your opinion (if any) on Sherlock's sexuality? Does it matter, or is it irrelevant to you as writers?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:50
Gatiss/Moffat:
Sherlock lives in his brain - everything else is transport. Unless we're lying. Again.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:50
MasterpieceModerator:
We've got just about 10 minutes left... a few more questions!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:50

Monday November 8, 2010 1:50
Gatiss/Moffat:
No.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:51
[Comment From Alice E ]
This is for Mark: Which do you prefer acting or writing?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:51
Gatiss/Moffat:
Mark: Neither. I fancy keeping bees. Seriously - I love both.<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:52
[Comment From A_Hyde]
In "The Great Game," in the astronomy professor's lecture, I could have sworn that's Peter Davison narrating. Is it?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:52
Gatiss/Moffat:
No it was the REAL DOCTOR WHO. Okay, yes, it was Peter.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:52
[Comment From qthewetsprocket]
If you could both ask Sherlock Holmes one question, what would it be?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:52
Gatiss/Moffat:
Steven: What did Mark ask?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:53
[Comment From C-Pro]
Sherlock has shown off his running skills, his sympathy skills, and his homeless-networking skills. Are we going to get to see his Master of Disguise skills?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:53
Gatiss/Moffat:
Mark: Got any ideas for series 3?<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:53

Monday November 8, 2010 1:54
Gatiss/Moffat:
May...ish<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:54
MasterpieceModerator:
We're getting a lot of questions - is there anything else that you can tell us about the second series (which we're eagerly awaiting)...
Monday November 8, 2010 1:55
Gatiss/Moffat:
Nope.... 3 words is your lot!<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:55
[Comment From Shawna]
How many seasons do you hope to make? Or will you just keep going until you get bored?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:55
Gatiss/Moffat:
We'll never get bored of Sherlock Holmes<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:56
[Comment From Lindsey]
If you want fans to take away one thing from watching Sherlock, what would it be?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:56
Gatiss/Moffat:
The desire to buy the DVD!! Really it's been lovely to see people wanting to read the original stories as a result of the show and hopefully they want to see more of our version<

The ending of The Great Game was cruel (and awesome, but mostly cruel). I will accept your apology now.
Monday November 8, 2010 1:19

Did you always intent to have The Great Game end on such a massive cliff hanger? Even when you knew there may not be a second series?

you'll wait a long while! Make em cry, make em laugh, make em wait!<

Is it true that the voice of the child at the end of The Grat Game is Mr. Moffat's son?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:21
Gatiss/Moffat:
At an early stage episode 3 had a more low key ending but as we ramped up the plot we needed a bigger pay off<
Monday November 8, 2010 1:21

Monday November 8, 2010 1:25

Mark: At least that might be pronounced correctly<

Doctor Who, a program you both love and write for was strongly influenced by Sherlock Holmes in its early days. Did you find yourselves drawing comparisons between the characters of Sherlock and the Doctor as you wrote for the two shows or did you keep them unconnected in your minds? Also, you're both brilliant oh my god.

The overarch of Season One seemed to focus, intentionally and unintentionally, on discovering the identity or Moriarty. Will the overarch of Season Two continue to be focused on him or will there be an added continuous "theme"? And thank you for the wonderful television!

The rapid-fire deduction monologues in this series are really great. How do you go about writing those, and how long do they typically take?

Do you feel the new Sherlock is more morally ambiguous than Doyle's? In the books, he is usually pretty firmly on the side of law enforcement. Except that time he broke into the house of the serial blackmailer. Love the show!
Monday November 8, 2010 1:47
Gatiss/Moffat:
We're in the very priveleged position of being at the very beginning - everything is up for grabs!

What is your opinion (if any) on Sherlock's sexuality? Does it matter, or is it irrelevant to you as writers?
Monday November 8, 2010 1:50
